What Are Instagram Highlights?

Instagram highlights are a conglomeration of stories that will appear on your profile. 

If you use Instagram on a regular basis, then you most definitely have seen those stories on top of your feed. 

Unlike regular Instagram stories, which disappear after 24 hours, your highlight will stay on your profile until you choose to delete them. 

So highlights work just like regular stories. The only difference is that with your highlights, you will no longer be able to see who watched your story after the 24 hours pass. Instead, you will be able to see the total number of viewers on each individual highlighted story. 

You can add 100 videos or photos in one highlighted category, but the great thing is that you can create as many highlights as you’d like. 

How to Create an Instagram Highlight and Edit It?

You can always add a current or archived story in your highlights. But before you can do this, you must first create your highlight. Here’s how you can do this:

  • You add a new story or go to an existing story
  • Select the highlight icon

  • Go to “Add New Highlight” and tap it
  • Write out the name of your highlight collection, add a cover, and create it 

Note: When selecting the name of your Instagram highlight, beware that you will be able to use a total of 15 characters, out of which only 10 will be visible.

Adding Stories to Your Highlight 

Once you have your highlight created, you can add your stories to it. How do you do that?

a) Add the current picture or video to your highlight by clicking the highlight icon and selecting one of the existing categories. 

b) Another way to do this is to go to your highlight, select it, and click ‘Edit Highlight.’ There, under the ‘Selected’ category, you will see all the stories that have been already added to your highlight. 

Under the ‘Stories’ category, you will be able to see your story archive. You can simply start selecting stories from your archives and adding them to your highlight. 

Change the Cover of Your Highlight 

Now, generally speaking, your Instagram highlight will grab one of your stories as a cover. If you want to have a personalized cover that includes brand colors or logos, then you can simply go to your profile and:

  • Hold on to the highlight that you want to edit OR click on it and go to ‘More’
  • Select ‘Edit Highlight
  • Go to ‘Edit Cover
  • Select the picture that you have prepared for your cover

Removing Stories from Highlights

If you want to remove stories from your highlight, you can do it in one of two ways:

Go through your stories and remove each other individually. To do this, you:

  • press the ‘More’ icon 
  • choose the ‘Remove from Highlight’ option

If you want to remove a batch of stories, then you should:

  • select your highlight of choice
  • tap ‘Edit Highlight’
  • select all the stories you want to delete

Deleting a Highlight 

Sometimes, you need to clean up your profile in order to start anew. This means deleting older highlights and creating some new ones instead. 

To delete the highlight you no longer want, you should go to your profile, and hold down your finger on that specific highlight until the menu appears. 

Then you can simply select ‘Delete Highlight’

For example, let’s say that you own a small clothing brand and you want to promote a new collection on Instagram. You can do this by:

  1. Creating a new Highlight 
2. Naming it ‘New Collection’3. Posting pictures of the clothes on your story4. Saving the stories in your new highlight 

If you’re offering a service, you can post more details about the specific service, like the features of the service, the pricing, the benefits, or your USP (unique selling point).

The format of highlights makes your stories easy to find and navigate. If your highlights are organized well, your lead can instantly find a highlight that they are interested in and start tapping through the stories within.

  • Add descriptive names to each highlight category
  • Add a cover for each Instagram highlight

Although you can add a total of 100 stories to each highlight, don’t overdo it and get close to that number. A huge number of stories will make it harder to find a specific picture or video and it will end up being frustrating for the viewer.
